What should I call my home reno/DIY blog?

My husband and I just bought our first home and we’re going to start a blog to document the renovation process. Also, we really enjoy finding old things from thrift stores, garage sales, etc. and fixing them up, so we want to be able to share some of those before and afters, too. We want the name to be meaningful/personal, so here’s a little about us: It’s just the two of us. We’ve been married for two years, just graduated from college, and are now working in the business world, and trying to balance work with more work at home! ;)

We need a name for our blog that gives an idea of what the blog is about, without limiting our posts to the house only. We want to be able to post about our other projects, too (i.e. upcycled furniture). Also, my husband likes the idea of using our address number, 500, in the name or the name of the house, Midland, but these don’t have to be included. Any suggestions?

First of all you sound like exceptionally boring people.

What you are doing is what I should have done 12 years ago. We bought a house on the internet(sight unseen). It turned into a massive project(still not done). This was actually our 11th home(6 owned,5 rented). Most involved at least some renovation. We also love thrift stores and they can really help in your renovations. Much of ours has been accomplished with thrift store bargains, including Pella windows, Kohler plumbing materials, doors and appliances. We just remodeled our kitchen(2nd time), with cabinet doors bought from HH thrift store. We also found a large building materials salvage place, where we bought much of our trim. We also found bldg materials at auction houses.

I could go on but to answer your question, it depends somewhat on if you intend to monetize your blog. If not, just anything catchy. Do you want a lot of look-loos or do you want to attract people who can give you advice as well as your advice to others. Do you want curiosity seekers coming to your house? If not don’t include too much of your house and address info in the name or in your articles. Either way what you name it is less important than how you present your articles. If you use WordPress the whole process is quite easy and free.

Absolutely take before and after pics. also videos of projects(sale-able, but time consuming). I did take photos, but wish I had taken videos(still don’t). It is a lot easier now as you can set up a webcam and edit later.

I am in the process of setting up a DIY blog as well so am in similar dilemma. I do intend to monetize and I have found this resource; http://www.blogcuration.com/(I don’t get paid). I did sign up for the quick-start and find it very helpful and thorough. I would be interested in how you proceed(blog and reno) and also willing to offer/take advice. I am loathe to make my email public so this one I don’t use very often, but will check in the coming days. halpad@yahoo.com
